Different industries call this stage different things: Ideation, Concept, Discovery, Pre-visualization or Pre-Production phase. I like to keep it simple: Ideas is when I learn the client’s objective, target audience, the message & determine the modality for the biggest results. I use interviews questions, concept art, prototypes, scripts, storyboards & animatics. Sometimes a client is convinced they need a complicated video with special effects for a live event, but after we go through the Idea process it turns out a PowerPoint would empower their Speaker to interact with the audience (see RISC Vegas Zombie King prototype). By defining the Idea, the client gets a process to formulate a timeline & budget to proceed. The benefits save time & money later on. The examples below showcase my skills in Graphic design, Art Direction, UX Design & Presentation Design.
Sometimes the Ideas become + Design and + Motion solutions as with the Captora, Qvidian & Platform 9 projects because the client loved the look. Everyone got lucky on those ones, but usually the artwork I design in this stage are quick sketches, not final artwork & an animatic is a tool for timing sequences, not a video. They are not meant for public viewing, but used to organize & communicate the idea for the client, to other teams, like animators, event planners or game coders.
